REQUIREMENTS
A. Education Level: Bachelor’s degree or beyond and a current, valid
South Dakota teaching certificate with K – 12
Music endorsement.
B. Experience Desired: Minimally, student teaching. Previous teaching
experience in vocal music at the secondary level
preferred.
C. Other Requirements: Strong background in piano. Strong background
in vocal performance. Must possess excellent
oral and written communication skills. Strong
listening and problem-solving skills, skills in
human relations, leadership and conflict
management. In-depth knowledge of effective
teaching strategies and subject matter. Portrays
a positive self-concept and attitude toward teaching. Maintains professional appearance. Demonstrated ability to work courteously and cooperatively with people in a multi-person environment. Ability to work efficiently with a wide range of students, staff and administration. Demonstrated computer skills. Ability to handle stress and the ability to exercise self-control. React to change productively. Demonstrated ability to maintain privacy and confidentiality in dealing with individuals and/or their records.
D. Physical Requirements: This position requires constant eye-hand, mind-
eye coordination. Constant hearing; intermittent
speaking, standing, walking, sitting, crouching,
reaching, pushing/pulling and writing. Frequent
carrying of up to twenty five (25) pounds. A valid
South Dakota driver’s license and the ability to
drive a car.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES:
- Support the mission of the Aberdeen Catholic School System: Instilling Catholic values and promoting academic excellence by nurturing mind, body, and soul.
- In cooperation with the administration, develop the criteria to be met by students.
- Schedule all rehearsals, performances, and competitions.
- Arrange transportation and assume supervisory responsibility for any approved out-of-town events.
- Work with students to develop skills needed for effective performances.
- Give private lessons following a sequential curriculum.
- Request supplies and services needed to effectively meet the needs of the students in the program.
- Supervise the storage and care of supplies and materials.
- Establish and maintain a positive learning environment and respond to the individual needs of students.
- Communicate effectively and clearly with others.
- Ensure that all activities conform to district guidelines.
- Maintain accurate, complete and correct records as required by law, school district policy and school administrative requirements.
- Employ instructional strategies that address a variety of learning styles and strengths.
- Use a variety of assessment procedures, samples, and instruments to evaluate student learning and provide specific and immediate feedback.
- Prepare appropriate lesson plans for substitute teachers.
- Take all reasonable and necessary precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
- Maximize available amount of time for instruction.
- Meet and instruct assigned classes in the location(s) and time(s) designated.
- Set high expectations and standards for student achievement and behavior as appropriate to age and level of development.
- Diagnose learning disabilities of students on a regular basis, seeking assistance of district specialists as required.
- Strive to maintain and improve professional competence by participating in district-initiated staff development.
- Maintain appropriate supervision for all assigned students.
- Coordinate and supervise field trips as appropriate for assigned teaching area.
- Assist with the activities of student organizations as assigned.
- Assist with Liturgical Music at Roncalli Junior/Senior High School weekly Mass.
- Coordinate Liturgical Music at Roncalli Primary School weekly Mass.
- Obtain advance approval of the Principal for all activities and expenditures.
- Attend staff meetings and serve on committees as required.
- Use appropriate technology for both instructional and management functions.
- Recognize signs of emotional/physical distress in students and take appropriate action when necessary.
- Use appropriate and effective written and spoken language.
- Adhere to all district policies, handbooks, and regulations.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Building Principal or other administrative supervisor.
